Thai Labour Campaign reports on ruthless tactics used against garment
workers.
excerpts from Bangkok Post, January 8, 2003:
The abrupt closure late last year of Bed & Bath Prestige (Thailand),
in Samut Prakan's Phra Pradaeng district, threw more than 800 people
out of work.
Hundreds of former employees have been protesting outside the Labour
Ministry for the last three months demanding the arrest of two of
the firm's executives and payment of compensation from the firm.
Bed & Bath Prestige Co made clothing under global brands such
as Nike, Adidas and Reebok for export to the United States and Europe.
The factory had a registered capital of 35 million baht. Its major
shareholders were the Porkamchorn family.
Sources said assets were transferred to executives before the factory
closed.

Nike Campaign Update: A Thai worker's story of low wages and cruel
punishment in a Nike supply factory "My name is Lern. I grew up

and the work available was very badly paid, so in 1998 I moved to
the city to look for work..."
